On June 1st, residents of the Armand-Lavergne long-term care centre proudly took part in the Tour de l’Île de Montréal, thanks to adapted bikes funded by several of our generous donors.
Organized for many years by Vélo Québec, this was a first for the annual cycling event — welcoming older adults in adapted bikes.
The adapted bike project was initiated by the recreation team at the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal, and made possible thanks to the financial support of our donors, including the Fondation Luc Maurice, Desjardins, and the Fondation Cogir.
Thanks to their support, our care homes now have adapted bikes that allow older adults to continue enjoying the pleasure of cycling, even with reduced mobility.
Accompanied by a volunteer cyclist, residents can get out for a ride, enjoy the fresh air, and rediscover their neighbourhoods in a safe and enriching way. As we know, older adults were especially isolated during the pandemic, and opportunities for stimulation are more important than ever to support their well-being.
A heartfelt thank-you to all the individuals and organizations who help make these moments possible.
