For people-centred and attentive care, from birth to end of life.

By Nathalie, Antoine’s mother, resident of Montréal’s South-West

“When he was five, my son was terrified of doctors, nurses, dentists… all healthcare professionals, really.

He had a bad experience — a painful medical procedure done without explanation. It left him traumatized. For months, every time he felt sick, he tried to hide it. He kept telling us he didn’t need to see a doctor.

But sometimes, you don’t have a choice.

One day, we had to take him to the hospital. He was crying. He wanted to run away. At reception, we explained to the volunteer that he was scared.

And then… the magic began. She knelt down in front of him and spoke softly. She walked with us to the appointment room. She let the nurse know about the situation. In that large, bustling hospital, the nurse stopped everything. She focused entirely on my son. She explained every step, every tool. She promised that no one would touch him without first telling him. And she kept her word. We had several more appointments — for imaging, bloodwork, physiotherapy. Every time, all we had to say was: ‘Our son had a bad experience. He’s scared.’ And every time, the change was immediate. Getting down to his level. Speaking directly to him. Explaining before acting. Most importantly: they were honest. I remember one nurse telling him: ‘This will hurt a little. It won’t last more than 12 seconds. We’ll count together.’ Step by step, visit after visit, they earned his trust. They didn’t just care for his illness. They cared for him. To me, that’s what human care is all about. So thank you to all the healthcare teams. Because today, my son is nine. He’s healthy. And when he gets sick, he’s no longer afraid of seeing a doctor.”

We need you to help families like Antoine’s. From Verdun to the Plateau, whether in hospitals, CLSCs or CHSLDs, your donations make all the difference and bring these stories of hope to life.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.
