At 84 years old, a man living alone in Centre-Sud Montreal was preparing to leave a rehabilitation unit. He was coping with multiple physical health issues and cognitive challenges, making his return home a significant hurdle. Despite receiving clear recommendations to ensure his safety, he couldn’t afford two critical pieces of equipment: a raised toilet seat and a shower chair with a backrest.
Isolated, with no support network and ineligible for other funding programs, he could not be discharged until he had the necessary tools. His health condition required proper hygiene, but without a shower chair, home care services from the CLSC could not assist him with bathing.
Thanks to a modest investment of just $130, the Emergency Assistance Fund was able to make a real difference. Within a week, the equipment was delivered and installed in time for his safe return home. This swift, targeted action had a tangible impact: the man was able to go home with the dignity and safety he deserved, equipped to receive the care he needed—avoiding potential injuries or unnecessary complications.
“The day after he got home, the man told his care coordinator that the equipment paid for by the Foundation felt like a gift from an angel. It was just a raised toilet seat and a shower chair, but without them, he couldn’t be discharged from the hospital.”
