Adapted Bikes: A $17,500 Donation from the Cogir Foundation

A few months ago, we told you about the launch of an innovative pilot project: adapted electric bikes at the Manoir-de-Verdun, one the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal’s residential and long-term care centres (CHSLD).

On May 23, 2024, Fondation Santé Urbaine received a $17,500 donation from the Cogir Foundation for this wonderful project.

Through the Cogir Foundation’s invaluable contribution, we can buy a third adapted e-bike for CHSLD residents.

This donation represents priceless support, which allows us to take more residents on reinvigorating bike rides. The more bikes we have, the more people can benefit from this activity.

Cogir is committed to the well-being of older adults. What a pleasure for us to be able to offer CHSLD residents these moments of joy.”

Marie-Andrée Lefebvre (Executive Director, Fondation Santé Urbaine), Brigitte Pouliot (Director of Communications and of the Foundation, Cogir Real Estate), Isabelle Laurin (Manager of the Manoir-de-Verdun CHSLD, CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal), and Lise Proulx (Director, Major Gifts at Fondation Santé Urbaine).

A pilot project that has proven its worth with older adults

This new bike is paving the way for the growing success of the activity.

Since the e-bikes arrived at the CHSLD, the recreation team has noticed just how much the residents appreciate them.

In addition to offering them a moment of joy and freedom, the bicycle outings give residents the opportunity to meet other people on the bike paths, chat with neighbours, and hence, break the isolation many experience.

“We went out several times last summer and fall. These bike rides are greatly appreciated. They bring so much joy and happiness! We have a resident in the centre who was a former cyclist and going out for a ride reminds her of her youth,” reveals André Gervais, recreation technician at the CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal.

“Now that the sun is shining and the beautiful weather is back, we plan on making the most of it! Several other CIUSSS du Centre-Sud-de-l’Île-de-Montréal residential centres were invited to the Manoir-de-Verdun for a picnic and to use the bikes. There are also a few community organizations who come and take the bikes out for a ride,” states Recreologist Isabelle Lambert.

A huge thank-you to the Cogir Foundation for this major donation and for its commitment to the well-being and happiness of our residents.
